Krishnamurti Dakshinamurti, Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada , received his PhD in 1957. After working as a Senior Research Associate at the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, he was appointed Associate Director of the Research Institute, Lancaster, PA. He was invited to the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine as Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1964, becoming Full Professor in 1973. He spent 1974 – 75 as Visiting Professor of Cell Biology at the Rockefeller University, New York. He received the Borden Award of the Canadian Societies of Biological Sciences in 1973 and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, U.K., and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, Fellow and President of the International College of Nutrition. He is the author of over 200 peer reviewed publications and six books in the areas of metabolic biochemistry, nutrition and neuroscience. The monograph on “Vitamin Receptors” which he edited in 1994 was reprinted by Cambridge University Press in 2010 in their “classics series”. Dr. Dakshinamurti has been on the Editorial Board of many international journals in the area of Neuroscience, Biochemistry and Nutrition. His pioneering work in the area of epigenetic effects of vitamins is highly regarded. Dr. Dakshinamurti was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, London. He has been invited to lecture at over 100 universities and research centers around the world. Dr. Dakshinamurti was elected to Emeritus Professorship of the University of Manitoba in 1998. He was Co-Director of the Centre for Health Policy Studies at the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre. Currently he is the Senior Advisor of the Research Centre and has evaluated Cardiovascular Research across Canada.

Dr. Barzilai is a chaired Professor of Medicine and Genetics and the Director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which is currently the biggest Center in the world to study the Biology of Aging, and home to 2 Centers of Excellence in the Biology of Aging. He studies healthy life span in rodents by biological interventions, and also families of centenarians and several drugs are developed based, in part, on these studies. He is a recipient of Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction in Aging Research and the IPSEN Longevity award. He is founder of CohBar Inc., and leading the TAME (Targeting/Taming Aging with MEtformin) study multi central study to prove that concept that multi morbidities of aging can be delayed in humans and change the FDA indications to allow for next generation interventions.

Dr. Pessin’s research in Diabetes and insulin action has centered on the molecular analysis of liver insulin resistance resulting in increased gluconeogenesis driving hyperglycemia and de novo lipogenesis driving non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). These efforts focus on intracellular insulin signaling cascades and the control of gluconeogenic and lipogenic gene expression. In parallel, studies on adipocyte biology focus on adipose tissue inflammation and the regulation of the NF-kB signaling pathway. These efforts utilize state-of-the-art cell and molecular biological approaches that include genetic mouse models (knockout, knockin and transgenic expression) in addition to integrative physiology of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. These studies are providing important new information for our understanding of the molecular events causing altered metabolism and the basis for more effective treatments of diabetes, obesity and metabolic dysregulation. He as published over 275 peer-reviewed research studies and book chapters/reviews. Dr. Pessin received his B.A./MA. degrees from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois. He then was a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Michael Czech at The University of Massachusetts Medical Center and was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Physiology & Biophysics at The University of Iowa in 1983. Dr. Pessin was promoted to Associate Professor (1988) and Professor (1991). He was also appointed as the Associate Director of The University of Iowa Diabetes Center in 1991 and received the Eli Lilly Outstanding Investigator Award from the American Diabetes Association in 1996 and The University of Iowa Foundation Distinguished Professorship in 2001. In 2003, he became the Chair of the Department of Pharmacological Sciences at Stony Brook University where he received the William and Jane Knapp Professorial Chair of Pharmacological Sciences. Dr. Pessin accepted his current position as Diabetes Center Director and the Judy R. and Alfred A. Rosenberg Professorial Chair in Diabetes Research at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2008. As a well-established and internationally recognized research scientist, Dr. Pessin has served on numerous scientific review panels, research boards and program development committees. He has also been an active in the management in the peer-review process serving as the past Editor-in-Chief for Endocrinology and the American Journal of Physiology (Endocrinology & Metabolism), Senior Associated Editor for Diabetes and currently Associate Editor for the Journal of Biological Chemistry. His wealth of experience in diabetes research and administration will continue the tradition of strong leadership as the Director of The Albert Einstein College Diabetes Center.
